Monday I began group counseling with five students, three girls and two boys, all fourth graders. The topic of the group is friendship and how to be a friend as well as make friends. I used a “friendship box” which included a mirror, a rubber band, a ruler, glue and a die. Each item was used to illustrate the important aspect of friendship. For example the glue was used to show that friends stick together, no matter what. The rubber band illustrated the need for flexibility within a friendship; the ruler showed the need for good judgment and the die showed the need to take turns in whatever you are doing. The students loved the lesson. The only issue I had with them was they didn’t want to leave when the lesson was over.

This is a link to a site that is for counselors to exchange ideas or ask questions of other counselors. When you first ask to join the forum, it may take a couple hours to receive a confirmation e-mail, but once you get in, there are many forums to search for answers to questions you may have and if you can't find what you need, you can always start a new thread. As a beginning counselor, I think resources like this will prove invaluable.

This is a link to a site that helps you start  a school website, leading you step by step on how to set it up and what to include. It lists free ways to progress as well as low cost options. I partiularily like the general info section becasue it started at the biginning about including a picture of the school and included stuff that might be forgotten, such as include a picture of yourself. Not only does it say to include the mission statement but to include a section to update features as needed.

Today we had three guidance lessons; the first, second and fifth grades. It was different lessons on fair play and showed the students how they would have more friends if they played fairly. Later, a student was sent to the guidance office becasue he had been caught drawing guns in class and told a boy he would kill him. After talking to him, he saw how inappropriate such statement are.

To me being a counselor means to be able to be an active listener while maintaining an unconditional positive regard for clients. Counselors are more important than ever in Kentucky because I just read an article that said 22 children were killed last year and 32 were nearly killed by abusive parents. I wonder how many could have been saved if the parent’s had received counseling to deal with their drug addiction and anger issues. I want to be a counselor because if I can prevent the death of one child I will feel that I have accomplished a world of good. The major contribution I think I can make is to help the children to  overcome their fears enough to be able to reach out for help.

I worked with my first student yesterday; an 8 year old male with fear issues.  After speaking with him a few minutes I realized that the main fear he had was the Code Red at school.  I didn’t know what Code Red was so I asked him to explain it to me.  Code Red is a safety measure at the schools when a stranger who is perceived to be a threat enters the school. He went into great detail explaining the procedures about turning off the lights, racing to the large walk in closets and pushing a filing cabinet in front of the locked door. All the children crouch on the floor in the dark, without speaking. I agree with the safety measures since school shootings have become far too commonplace, but I wonder if there shouldn’t be a program in place to help the children realize that not every stranger is there to do them harm.  Common sense has to be used in explaining danger to students, because otherwise, we are going to end up with a generation of timid, fearful young people.

Today I went to McBrayer and worked with the fifth, second and the first grade classes for guidance on bullying and friendship. Mrs. Powell told me she visits every class twice a month. The lessons are customized for the needs of the class, with every class having extra lessons on bullying and how to prevent it. I also sat in on a fifth grade class covertly observing a student for Mrs. Powell.  The student is on a very destructive path and they are looking for any way to help change his behavior. The student's older brother also attended the school and is now a very troubled high school on the verge of dropping out. The hope is to change the behavior in the younger student while there is still time.  I am returning tomorrow for an ARC meeting and am scheduled to go to the preschool for an ARC meeting in which the parents are fighting to prevent the students being placed in Special Ed.

  I am also preparing a four session lesson on friendship with a group of four students. I have several ideas on how to teach these lessons-a few of which might actually work.
